Built by reef-keepers, for reef-keepers.
Tank Commander started with a hobby, a problem, and a stubborn refusal to lose another tank to something preventable. We're aquarists first, and the company grew out of a shared passion for reefing and fish-keeping.
How it started
Existing controllers were either too expensive once you added every probe, or too fiddly to bother with. So we combined decades of engineering with our own years at the glass, and built the controller we always wished we could buy.
The founders
Faraz Ali Khan
FounderFaraz turned years of late-night water changes, heater scares, and parameter spreadsheets into the idea for Tank Commander. With 15 years of professional experience across Microsoft, Amazon, and biotech, he pairs enterprise-grade engineering discipline with a reef-keeper's obsession for getting the small things right. A problem-solver at heart and a reefer by passion, Faraz leads the product vision, turning a hobbyist's wish list into hardware he'd stake his own tank on.
Omer Malik
Co-FounderOmer Malik is a technology leader with over 15 years of experience in software engineering, AI vision, and application development. As a Director of Engineering at Microsoft, he brings deep technical expertise in building scalable, user-focused digital products. As a co-founder at Tank Commander, Omer helps shape the platform's technology strategy, product architecture, and long-term innovation roadmap.
David Krick
Technical AdviserDavid brings 46 years of electronics experience from Ford Motor, North American Lighting, and Waters Corp. Primarily devoted to electronics design and electronics library management, he oversaw the new ECAD installation at North American Lighting. His decades of hardware rigor keep Tank Commander's electronics reliable, serviceable, and built to last.
Our principles
- Stable beats clever. A controller that fails silently is worse than no controller.
- Every sensor included. No probe-by-probe upsell. No subscription.
- Own your data. Open API, exportable history, no lock-in.
- We answer the phone. Real humans, no chatbots.
