Terms of service & Acceptable Use.
These terms cover the relationship between you and Tank Commander when you buy or pre-order our hardware, use the Tank Commander mobile or web app, or browse this website. We've written them in plain English on purpose — if anything reads ambiguously, the customer-friendly interpretation wins.
Last updated: May 13, 2026.
1. Who we are
“Tank Commander,” “we,” and “our” refer to Tank Commander, Inc. and its products: the Tank Commander controller hardware, the iOS and Android applications, and the website at tankcommander.io. “You” refers to the person agreeing to these terms by ordering, pre-ordering, signing in, or otherwise using the service.
2. Orders, pre-orders, and payments
- Pre-order reservations hold your place in the production queue. Final pricing and shipping date are confirmed before any charge is authorized.
- Paid orders are charged at the time of purchase. Sales tax and shipping are added at checkout where applicable.
- You may cancel a pre-order any time before your order is fulfilled and we will refund any deposit in full within 10 business days.
- We use Stripe as our payment processor. We do not store full card numbers on our servers.
3. Shipping, returns, and warranty
We ship to the United States and Canada today. Domestic orders typically leave our East-US warehouse within 5 business days. International shipping is on the roadmap and will be announced via the newsletter when available.
Tank Commander hardware is covered by a 30-day return window for undamaged devices and a 2-year limited hardware warranty against manufacturing defects. See the warranty page for the full coverage and process.
4. The Tank Commander app and online services
- The iOS and Android apps and the cloud features needed for remote access and push notifications are provided free of charge with the device. We may add optional paid services in future; existing functionality stays included.
- We do our best to keep the cloud service available, but we cannot guarantee 100% uptime. Your controller continues to run schedules and rules locally even when the cloud is unavailable.
- You are responsible for keeping your account credentials private and for any actions taken under your account.
5. Acceptable use
Tank Commander is designed for residential and small-commercial aquarium and aquaculture use. When using our hardware, apps, or website, you agree not to:
- Use the product in life-support, medical, industrial-control, high-availability, or other safety-critical settings where failure could cause serious injury, environmental damage, or significant financial loss.
- Reverse-engineer, modify, or rehost the firmware or cloud APIs in a way that exposes other users' data or undermines the security of the service.
- Use the site or service to harass other users, distribute malware, send unsolicited bulk mail, or attempt to circumvent rate limits or authentication.
- Resell, sublicense, or republish bulk content (FAQ, articles, comparisons) without written permission. Quoting and linking are welcome.
6. What Tank Commander should not be relied on for, alone
Tank Commander is a helpful layer of monitoring and automation, not a replacement for sound aquarium husbandry. In particular:
- Always use a properly rated GFCI outlet for any tank equipment. Our smart outlets are protected, but a GFCI on the wall side is the industry-standard last line of defense against electrical faults.
- Heater automation rules reduce the risk of failure but do not eliminate it. A correctly sized heater and routine inspection are still required.
- Leak sensors detect water at the point of contact. They are not a substitute for property insurance, a watertight enclosure, or regular plumbing inspection.
- Cloud notifications depend on your home internet and your phone carrier. The on-device alarm is your primary alert and works independently.
7. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Tank Commander's total liability for any claim relating to the product, the apps, the website, or these terms is limited to the price you paid for the device in the twelve months preceding the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, or special damages, including loss of livestock, loss of business, or property damage that occurs despite proper use of the product. Nothing in these terms limits liability for gross negligence, willful misconduct, or anything else that cannot be limited under applicable law.
8. Intellectual property
All software, designs, text, graphics, and logos on Tank Commander properties are owned by Tank Commander, Inc. or its licensors. You may use, print, and share content from the site for personal, non-commercial purposes with attribution; please contact us before republishing in any commercial context.
9. Termination
You can stop using the service at any time by uninstalling the app and unplugging the device. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, with notice where reasonably possible. Termination does not affect refund eligibility under the return window and warranty.
10. Privacy
Our handling of personal data is covered in the privacy policy. The short version: we don't sell your data, we collect only what's needed to ship and support your order and operate the service, and you can request a copy or deletion at any time.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms when we add new products, services, or for legal reasons. Material changes are announced via email to active customers and via a notice on the website. Continued use of the service after a change indicates acceptance of the updated terms.
12. Governing law and contact
These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the State of Delaware, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Questions about these terms or anything else: write to legal tankcommander (dot) io.
This is a plain-language Terms of Service. A more formal legal version may be issued in future; if so, the more formal version will supersede this page in case of conflict and will be made available on request.
