Help with the Tank Commander app.
Answers to common questions about setting up your controller, staying connected, alerts, and your account. Can't find what you need? We reply within 1–2 business days.
Email hello tankcommander (dot) io or use the form below. Include your controller's ID (shown under its name in the app, like tc-1A2B3C) and your iPhone model so we can help faster.
Getting started
What do I need to use the app?
An iPhone running iOS 26.2 or later and a Tank Commander controller. The app is free; it's how you set up, monitor, and control your controller.
How do I sign in?
Use Sign in with Apple, Google, or your email and password. Your tanks are tied to your account, so sign in the same way on every phone you use.
How do I add my controller?
Power on the controller near your phone, then tap + on the My Tanks screen and choose Set Up New Device. The app finds the controller over Bluetooth, lets you pick your home Wi-Fi network, and links the controller to your account. See the setup guide for mounting and probe placement.
Why does the app ask for Bluetooth, Local Network and Location access?
Bluetooth is used to set up your controller and to reach it when you're nearby without internet. Local Network lets the app talk to the controller directly over your Wi-Fi if the internet is down. Location is only used by iOS to read the name of the Wi-Fi network your phone is on, so it can be pre-filled during setup. We never store or track your location.
Troubleshooting
The app can't find my controller during setup.
Make sure Bluetooth is on and Tank Commander is allowed to use it (iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth). Keep your phone within a few feet of the controller. A controller that's already linked to an account won't show up for setup; remove it from the old account first, or use Factory Reset in that tank's Settings tab.
Setup fails at the Wi-Fi step.
The controller connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks. Double-check the password, and if your router combines 2.4 and 5 GHz under one name, make sure 2.4 GHz is enabled. Guest networks that block devices from reaching the internet can also prevent setup.
My tank shows Offline.
The controller sends readings every 30 seconds, so the app shows Offline if it hasn't heard from it for about a minute. Check that the controller has power and that your Wi-Fi is working. If your internet is down but your phone is on the same Wi-Fi, the app switches to Local Mode automatically (see below).
What do Cloud, WiFi and Bluetooth mean next to my tank's status?
That's how the app is currently reaching your controller. Cloud works from anywhere. If the internet goes down, the app falls back to WiFi (directly on your home network) and then Bluetooth (when you're nearby), and returns to Cloud when it can. Live readings and outlet control work in all three; history charts and the Parameters log need Cloud.
An outlet asks me to override it when I tap it.
That outlet follows a rule or schedule. Overriding switches it for 5 minutes, then your automation takes back over. To control it by hand all the time, tap the gear icon on the outlet and set its mode to Manual.
A reading looks wrong.
pH and salinity probes drift over time and need calibration. Open your tank, go to the Settings tab, and follow the guided calibration for the pH probe (7.0, 4.0 and 10.0 solutions) or the salinity probe. A reading of N/A means the probe isn't connected or isn't reporting.
I'm not getting notifications.
Check that notifications are on for Tank Commander in iOS Settings → Notifications. In the app, tap the bell on a temperature, pH or salinity card to turn on alerts and set your safe range, and check each outlet's notification setting under its gear icon. Leak and low-water alerts are always on.
How do I update my controller's firmware?
Open your tank, go to the Settings tab and tap Firmware Updates. The app checks for updates and installs them over the air; the controller restarts when it's done. You'll also be prompted when an update is available.
Your account & data
How do I remove a tank from my account?
On My Tanks, press and hold the tank and choose Remove. To also erase its history and settings before giving the controller to someone else, use Factory Reset in the tank's Settings tab instead.
How do I delete my account?
In the app, tap the person icon at the top-left of My Tanks and choose Delete Account. This permanently deletes your account, your tank history, alerts and Parameters entries, and releases your controllers so they can be set up again. It can't be undone. If you can't access the app, contact us below and we'll delete it for you. See our privacy policy for details.
